Travelling with a Disability: Planning Your Next Trip

Travel is absolutely possible with a disability — it just requires a bit more planning. Whether you’re heading interstate or overseas, here’s how to make your trip as smooth as possible.

Research Accessibility Before You Book

Don’t assume a hotel or venue is accessible just because it says so. Call ahead and ask specific questions: Is there a roll-in shower? What is the door width? Is there step-free access to the restaurant?

Notify Airlines Early

Airlines have specific processes for passengers with disabilities. Notify the airline at the time of booking, not at check-in. Request wheelchair assistance, pre-boarding, and any equipment storage you need.

Can the NDIS Fund Travel?

The NDIS may fund support worker hours during travel if the travel is related to your disability supports. It does not fund your personal travel costs (flights, accommodation). Speak to your Support Coordinator about what’s claimable.

Pack Medications Carefully

Carry all medications in hand luggage with original prescriptions. For controlled substances, obtain a letter from your GP. For overseas travel, check the medication laws of your destination country.

Use the Companion Card

The Companion Card entitles eligible Australians with disability to a second ticket at no charge for their companion at participating venues. Apply through your state or territory government.
