Creating your first NDIS plan can feel overwhelming, but understanding the process makes it much more manageable. This guide walks you through every step — from your initial access request to your first planning meeting.
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
To access the NDIS you must be under 65 years of age, be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities.
Step 2: Submit an Access Request
Contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110 or visit your local NDIS office to submit an access request. You’ll need documentation from your treating health professionals confirming your disability.
Step 3: Prepare for Your Planning Meeting
Before your meeting, write down your goals — what you want to achieve in the short and long term. Think about daily living, employment, social participation, and health and wellbeing. The more specific your goals, the better your plan will reflect your needs.
Step 4: Attend Your Planning Meeting
Your planning meeting can be held face-to-face, by phone, or via video call with an NDIA planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC). Bring a support person if you’d like. Be honest and detailed about what you can and cannot do on your worst days, not just your best.
Step 5: Review Your Plan
After your meeting, you’ll receive your NDIS plan. Review it carefully. If you believe it doesn’t meet your needs, you have the right to request an internal review.
What Supports Can Be Funded?
NDIS funding is split into three budget categories: Core Supports, Capacity Building Supports, and Capital Supports. Each has different rules about how the funding can be spent.
Tips for a Successful Plan
- Bring a support worker, family member, or advocate to your planning meeting
- Keep a diary of your disability-related needs in the weeks before your meeting
- Research typical funding amounts for your disability type
- Ask your LAC or support coordinator to help you prepare
