Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices can be life-changing for NDIS participants with communication difficulties. Here’s an overview of the main options available in Australia.
What Is AAC?
AAC refers to any tool that supplements or replaces speech. This ranges from low-tech picture boards to high-tech speech-generating devices (SGDs). The NDIS funds AAC under Assistive Technology.
Tobii Dynavox Devices
Tobii Dynavox is one of the leading AAC manufacturers. Their devices range from tablet-based systems like the I-Series to eye-tracking devices for people with very limited motor control. Prices range from $3,000 to over $20,000 depending on complexity.
Proloquo2Go (iPad-Based)
For many participants, an iPad with Proloquo2Go ($449 from the App Store) combined with a rugged case is an effective and portable AAC solution. The NDIS may fund the iPad as part of an AT package if recommended by a Speech Pathologist.
Getting AAC Funded Through the NDIS
You’ll need an assessment from a Speech Pathologist who specialises in AAC. They will trial different devices with you and prescribe the most appropriate option. Don’t purchase without an AT assessment — it may not be funded retrospectively.
