Living well with a disability is about more than just managing symptoms — it’s about building a life that’s meaningful, connected, and on your terms. Here are ten practical tips from people with lived experience.
1. Know Your Rights
The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 protects you from discrimination in employment, education, and access to premises. Knowing your rights helps you advocate for yourself confidently.
2. Build Your Support Network
Don’t rely on just one person or service. A diverse support network — family, friends, support workers, peer groups — provides resilience when one part of that network is unavailable.
3. Use Your NDIS Plan Strategically
Don’t let your plan funds sit unused. Review your budget quarterly and use unspent funds before your plan anniversary — they don’t roll over in most cases.
4. Connect with Peer Support
People who share your disability experience are often the best source of practical advice. Look for peer support groups through your condition-specific organisation or local disability services.
5. Prioritise Mental Health
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Psychology and counselling can be funded through the NDIS under Capacity Building if it relates to your disability.
6. Make Your Home Work for You
Home modifications funded through the NDIS can dramatically increase your independence. An OT assessment can identify what changes would be most beneficial.
7. Stay Physically Active
Exercise adapted to your abilities improves mood, energy, and overall health. Exercise Physiology sessions can be NDIS-funded under Capacity Building — Improved Health and Wellbeing.
8. Plan for Emergencies
Create a personal emergency plan that covers what happens if your support worker cancels, if there’s a power outage (for powered equipment users), or a natural disaster.
9. Use Assistive Technology
From smartphone accessibility features to purpose-built AT devices, technology can reduce barriers significantly. Ask your OT about what’s available and what the NDIS may fund.
10. Advocate for Yourself
You are the expert on your own life. Don’t be afraid to push back on decisions that don’t feel right, seek second opinions, and ask for what you need clearly and directly.
